Dear
Upward Bound Alumni, Staff, Students, Friends, and Family,
Upward
Bound and other programs that make difference in low-to-middle
income, first-generation-to-college students lives is on the chopping
block. Upward Bound is one of the “150 government programs
that are not getting results, or duplicate current efforts, or
do not fulfill essential priorities.” (George W Bush, State
of the Union speech, Feb 2005)
He wants to take the
money from this college preparation program and put the money
into ‘No Child Left Behind’, which is a high school
completion program. While I admire the goal, ‘No Child’
does not go far enough. If the low-to-middle income, first-generation-to-college
students are not going to be left behind, they need further education.
That’s what Upward Bound does.
Please
let our President, your Senators, and your Representatives know
that UB is a program that gets results, does not duplicate ‘current
efforts,’ and is very important to help break the cycle
of poverty. Let them know what a difference this program has made
in YOUR lives.
Thank
you for your time, your cares, your prayers, and your effort.
